The role

Head of Commercial Services
£74,634

This is an ideal career opportunity for an individual who can combine a keen appreciation of how commercial businesses operate with an informed perspective on the priorities and governance of a local authority.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Executive, Regeneration & Commercial you will promote a customer focused, commercial approach to relevant services and work to establish the systems, and more importantly, the culture that will encourage a more entrepreneurial approach to service design.

Your immediate service responsibilities will focus on traded services, property and regeneration, but there will also be opportunities to work with wider council services to identify where a more commercial approach could open up opportunities for income generation and enhanced service provision. You will also act as the Corporate Landlord and be accountable for the Council’s estate (commercial and operational assets).

It's an opportunity that will suit someone who has provided operational and strategic direction to the management of commercial services and successfully delivered on income generation targets. Specific experience in areas such as commercial waste, asset management and regeneration will be of particular interest – though we do not expect people to have worked directly in all of these. It’s important that you have an excellent knowledge of procurement and contract management and that you have practical experience of both of these areas.

You should already be working in a management role and be accustomed to performance management across a range of professional disciplines. And, it’s essential that you have an informed appreciation of the dynamics of working in a political setting, including its mechanisms for accountability and reporting and the need to engage with elected members on decision-making.
